MATER CHRISTI PARISH

Parish Community

All with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brethren.
Acts 1:14

MATER CHRISTI, GROUPS

Mater Christi Yangebup, is a flourishing parish with more than 1,200 people attending Mass over any given weekend. Many groups gather during the week for various activities and apostolates, ranging from the St. Vincent De Paul to the important liturgical ministries and parish maintenance busy-bees. These groups are an important part of the life and activity of the parish as they provide a very practical occasion to put the Catholic faith into practice, to give back to the community and of course for friendship.

Please reach out to the specific group co-ordinator to find out more and how you can get involved. Also, keep an eye on the weekly Mater Messenger so you don’t miss out on the many meetings and activities that are happening during the week. Refer also to the Meeting Dates button below for the monthly calendar.

Rosters

Acolytes

Acolytes actively assist the priests in liturgical celebrations, especially in the celebration of the Mass, and attend to the service of the altar. Each Sunday an Acolyte from the parish also conducts a Communion Service at Frank Prendergast House, Success. Acolytes or Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Communion distribute Communion to infirm and elderly parishioners who are unable to attend Mass, either in their own homes, at Regents Gardens, Aubin Grove and Southern Cross Care Success Village. We are always looking for more people to participate in this ministry.

Altar Servers

As Servers advance in knowledge and leadership skills they progress from Altar Ministers into the Guild of St. Stephen. Serving at the altar is therefore not exclusively for children. Youth in their teenage years are strongly encouraged to consider joining this ministry, as are adults, who would receive training as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, to serve at Mass as Senior Altar Ministers.

Altar Ministers

Open to children aged 7 and above, Altar Ministers assist the priest during Mass by performing essential tasks, such as carrying the cross, holding candles, and preparing the altar. They learn about the structure of the Mass, sacred objects, and the liturgical calendar, while developing a sense of reverence, responsibility, and participation in the church community. Here at Mater Christi, it is not necessary for children to receive their 1st Holy Communion before becoming Altar Ministers (Altar Servers).

The Guild of St. Stephen

The Guild of St. Stephen is an international organisation for altar servers, founded in 1901, aimed at encouraging high standards of altar service. It promotes dedication to Christ through service at the altar, fostering spiritual growth and community. Members receive the Guild Medal, symbolising their dedication to this ministry and their overall spiritual growth as they learn to commit themselves to Christ.

Senior Altar Ministers

Senior Altar Ministers, aged 18 and above, serve in a leadership capacity, guiding other Servers. They take on additional responsibilities such as setting up for Mass, assisting with the distribution of Holy Communion and supporting the priest with more complex liturgical duties. Senior Ministers foster a deeper understanding of the faith and ensure the dignity and flow of the liturgy.

Music Ministry

A diverse and important ministry for all of our Parish liturgical celebrations! From all week-end Masses as well as special celebrations throughout the liturgical year, musicians and singers are always sought. We are always looking for more people to participate in this ministry.

Friendship Club

This active group is open to ALL for social gatherings on the first Wednesday each month. There is no restriction on age or gender and new faces and fresh ideas for outings are always welcome.

Legion of Mary

This is an association of Catholic men and women who have formed themselves for service of apostolic good works and prayer in union with Mary.

St Vincent de Paul

We share ourselves – what we have and who we are – with the poor on a person-to-person basis. We are a volunteer outreach group working within our community.

Meetings are each Tuesday evening at 7:00pm in the Meeting Room in the Parish Centre. (Fortnightly meetings in winter, every week in summer).

Maintenance

We are fortunate at Mater Christi to have a very active group of volunteers who are generous with their time and professional skills to maintain the church and surrounding grounds. Every month there is a busy-bee to which anyone can come and lend a hand.

With the extensive gardens and the age of the church, we are always looking for people who can help in any way. Busy-bees are on the 1st Saturday of every month from 8am till the work is done!

The Safeguarding Project is a part of Archbishop Timothy Costello’s response to the Royal Commission Into Institutional Child Abuse. All Parishes now have Safeguarding Officers who maintain a presence in the Parish and are trained as a first point of contact for children and vulnerable adults who are experiencing abuse or have concerns along these lines. Officers are also responsible for overseeing Parish activities to keep our children and vulnerable adults safe.
