The Sacramental Programme
This week marks the conclusion of children in our parish receiving the Sacraments for the first time this year. Over 140 children received Confirmation, more than 140 children received the Sacrament of Holy Communion, and 145 children received their First Reconciliation. The programme used this year was more parish based, family centred, and school supported.
In our review of the programme and its implications, we have decided to alter the programme for next year. The programme will focus on families and their place they are in on the faith journey. It will be run by the parish, and the schools will support the programme as they teach religious education to the children according to the curriculum. It will be based on the experience of encounter with God. We note that for many the sacraments seem isolated from the lives of the children and their families.
So next year, we as a parish will offer two programmes during the year for those seeking one of the Sacraments. Both the parents and their children will be involved in the eleven-week programme. The programme will be conducted by the parish and also requires an effort from the whole parish. If we are to welcome families and get them involved in the Church and its activities, each of us must welcome those who are new in our community and are seeking to belong.
