The Lord's Great Return
We have come towards the end of the Church’s calendar year. It is not then surprising that we would be directed to think about the future and the Last Things. So, the Church gets us to think about a fundamental message: a great reckoning is coming. To the faithful it is not a threat but encouragement, comfort, and assurance. There is then a double message, one being, “Hang in there” the Son of Man will come, and second being, do not think you can calculate or know when that will be. The time of His coming is known only to God.
The precise time of the end is known only to God. Therefore, the disciple must not allow him or herself to be misled by claims or speculations that the end is near. What the theme challenges us to do, is to maintain a constant watchfulness. The purpose of the Lord’s glorious coming will be to gather His elect. We share a faith in God’s victory in Christ Jesus.
